Lee Daniels horror hit The Deliverance has managed to hold the number one spot on Netflix since its debut on August 30, but long before he got Glenn Close to portray a white woman who grew up in the Black community, he made his debut in features with the 2001 Oscar-winning film Monsters Ball, which he says was “developed with drug money.” Daniels served as the sole producer on the film through his newly-minted company Lee Daniels Entertainment, making him the first Black producer in history to produce an Academy Award-winner entirely on his own.
